| Freedom Riders Exhibit--October 16 through November 13 (Multi-Day Event) All Day
Ingram Library
"Freedom Riders," a national touring exhibit that tells the story of the 1961 Freedom Rides, will be on display October 16 through November 13 at the University of West Georgia’s Ingram Library. The exhibit, presented by Ingram Library’s Penelope Melson Society, will be open during regular library hours.
Between May and December 1961, over 400 black and white Americans risked their lives to desegregate interstate buses and trains and terminal restaurants and waiting rooms. Many endured beatings and imprisonment, but in the end they prevailed. Theirs was the first unambiguous victory in the history of the Civil Rights Movement, and it raised expectations for greater victories in the future.
"Freedom Riders" combines powerful photography and news coverage of the 1961 Freedom Rides and examines the movement from many perspectives including that of the Riders, President John F. Kennedy and his administration, and world opinion. To enhance the experience, visitors can use their cell phones to access first-hand audio accounts from the Freedom Riders.
The exhibition will include three talks. Dr. Raymond Arsenault, the preeminent historian of the Freedom Riders movement and author of "Freedom Riders: 1961 and the Struggle for Racial Justice," will speak on Thursday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. His program will be preceded by a book signing at 6:30 p.m. and followed by a reception. At 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 25, UWG history professor Dr. Larry Rivers will present a program entitled, “The Civil Rights Struggle Before the Freedom Riders.” On Monday, November 5, at 3:30 p.m., Freedom Rider and Georgia native Joan Browning will speak on her involvement in the 1961 Freedom Rides and the experiences that led her to the black freedom struggle. Ms. Browning's program is being sponsored by the UWG Department of History, the UWG Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and Ingram Library. All three programs will be held in Ingram Library.
"Freedom Riders" is a traveling exhibition developed by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in partnership with AMERICAN EXPERIENCE. Major funding for the traveling exhibition is provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Exclusive corporate funding for AMERICAN EXPERIENCE is provided by Liberty Mutual. Major funding provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Additional funding provided by Lynn Bay Dayton, Rodger & Dawn Nordblom, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers. Photograph Credit: © Corbis. |
