Named in honor of professor emeritus Chester Gibson, the Gibson Public Speaking Contest showcases the talents of outstanding student speakers on our campus. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the contest, the program will include a brief tribute to Dr. Gibson for his outstanding service to our university. You and your students are invited to attend the Gibson Public Speaking Contest, which will take place December 3 at 6:30 p.m. in TLC 1-305. The event takes place through the generous support of UWG’s Student Activity Fees Budget Allocation Committee and the publisher McGraw Hill. For more information, please contact Wendell Stone

UWG’s 5th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Program will feature renowned speaker and Presidential honoree, Dr. Calvin Mackie. The Center for Diversity and Inclusion will host the program on Thursday, Jan. 16. At 7 p.m. in the Campus Center Ballroom. This event is free and open to the public. “Annually, our office develops a theme relating to the principles of Dr. King and warriors of the Civil Rights Movement,” said Deirdre H. Rouse, interim director for the Center of Diversity and Inclusion. Student involvement is paramount; therefore they continue to have an active role in the yearly Martin Luther King, Jr. Program along with highlighting their community service.  UWG students will master the ceremony, usher, greet, and introduce the speaker.

EGADS (English Graduate Association of Dedicated Students) began hosting an annual community charity event last spring. At this event, both Drs. and professors of the English Department are selected to give a comedic reading, as well as participate in various "challenges" throughout the event. Last year, we raised over $700 dollars and collected around 120 childrens (and young adult) books, all of which were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Carrollton. This year, all proceeds will be given to Alice's House (a local children's shelter).

“Black Women have participated in defending this nation and their work has been mostly unrecognized”  Come and screen a documentary entitled Sista’ Soldier sponsored by the Center for Diversity and Inclusion on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 7pm in Room 108.2 Campus Center Ballroom.  The documentary highlights five modern day African American women speaking about their highs and lows of gender relations in the military and their overall perspective on military life.  This documentary is written, produced, and directed by Yvette Jackson, Retired Air Force Master Sergeant.  For additional information, please contact our office at 678-839-5400.  Co-sponsors: History Department and Student Veterans Association.

Snapshot: Community Preview

UWG Theater Company presents Snapshot, a diverse and unique perspective on what it means to be an American, forged in the wake of the September 11th tragedy. The performance is directed by guest artist Bill Bowers, a Broadway actor and mime who has performed across the US, Canada and Europe and held residencies at Harvard, Princeton, NYU, UCLA and numerous other programs across the country. Snapshot unfolds a series of scenes written by seventeen playwrights all with different reactions to Lee Friedlander’s iconic image, Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, 1969.  The production will run from February 12-15th at 7:30pm and February 15th and 16th at 2:30 in the Townsend Center for the Performing Arts Mainstage. There will also be a Community Preview February 11th at 7:30 pm for a discounted ticket price of $3.  Tickets for all other performances are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors. Volunteer with us February 15th from 7:30am to 1:00pm. We will meet outside the UCC, we have twenty seats available and they are first come first serve.
